The Name - Part 6 - Take/Bear the Name/Called by Name

2 Nephi 13:2

• Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ by baptism, yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost. Yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost, and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.

Mosiah 1:2

• And moreover I shall give this people a name that thereby they may be distinguished above all the people which the Lord God hath brought out of the land of Jerusalem. And this I do because they have been a diligent people in keeping the commandments of the Lord. And I give unto them a name that never shall be blotted out except it be through transgression. 

Mosiah 3:2

• Therefore I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, all you that have entered into the covenant with God that ye should be obedient unto the end of your lives.  And it shall come to pass that whosoever doeth this shall be found at the right hand of God, for he shall know the name by which he is called; for he shall be called by the name of Christ.

Mosiah 3:3

• And now it shall come to pass that whosoever shall not take upon them the name of Christ must be called by some other name; therefore he findeth himself on the left hand of God.  And I would that ye should remember also that this is the name that I said I should give unto you that never should be blotted out except it be through transgression; therefore take heed that ye do not transgress that the name be not blotted out of your hearts. I say unto you, I would that ye should remember to retain the name written always in your hearts, that ye are not found on the left hand of God, but that ye hear and know the voice by which ye shall be called and also the name by which he shall call you. For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served and who is a stranger unto him and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart? And again, doth a man take an ass which belongeth to his neighbor and keep him? I say unto you, Nay. He will not even suffer that he shall feed among his flocks but will drive him away and cast him out. I say unto you that even so shall it be among you if ye know not the name by which ye are called.

Mosiah 4:1

• And it came to pass that there was not one soul, except it were little children, but what had entered into the covenant and had taken upon them the name of Christ.

Mosiah 11:13

• And now there were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla. And it came to pass that whosoever were desirous to take upon them the name of Christ or of God, they did join the churches of God, and they were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed and prospered in the land.

Mosiah 11:16

• Yea, blessed is this people, who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called, and they are mine.  And because thou hast inquired of me concerning the transgressor, thou art blessed. Thou art my servant, and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life. And thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name and shall gather together my sheep. And he that will hear my voice shall be my sheep, and him shall ye receive into the church, and him will I also receive. For behold, this is my church. Whosoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance, and whosoever ye receive shall believe in my name, and him will I freely forgive. For it is I that taketh upon me the sins of the world, for it is I that hath created them. And it is I that granteth unto him that believeth unto the end a place at my right hand. For behold, in my name are they called, and if they know me, they shall come forth and shall have a place eternally at my right hand.

Alma 1:5

• But it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church of God began to persecute those that did belong to the Church of God and had taken upon them the name of Christ.

Alma 3:5

• Behold I say unto you that the good shepherd doth call you; yea, and in his own name he doth call you, which is the name of Christ. And if ye will not hearken unto the voice of the good shepherd, to the name by which ye are called, behold ye are not the sheep of the good shepherd.

Alma 16:26

• And now my beloved brethren, I desire that ye should remember these things and that ye should work out your salvation with fear before God and that ye should no more deny the coming of Christ; that ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you.

Alma 21:7

• Yea, all those who were true believers in Christ took upon them gladly the name of Christ, or Christians as they were called, because of their belief in Christ who should come. 

Alma 21:8

• And he said, Surely God shall not suffer that we who are despised because we take upon us the name of Christ shall be trodden down and destroyed until we bring it upon us by our own transgressions.

Alma 21:9

• if they should transgress the commandments of God or fall into transgression and be ashamed to take upon them the name of Christ, the Lord should rend them even as they had rent their garments.

3 Nephi 12:4

• And they said unto him, Lord, we will that thou wouldst tell us the name whereby we shall call this church, for there are disputations among the people concerning this matter. And the Lord said unto them, Verily, verily I say unto you, Why is it that the people should murmur and dispute because of this thing? Have they not read the scriptures which say ye must take upon you the name of Christ, which is my name? For by this name shall ye be called at the last day. And whoso taketh upon him my name and endureth to the end, the same shall be saved at the last day. Therefore whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name. Therefore ye shall call the church in my name, and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake. And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses' name, then it be Moses' church; or if it be called in the name of a man, then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name, then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel. Verily, I say unto you that ye are built upon my gospel. Therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do call in my name. Therefore if ye call upon the Father for the church, if it be in my name, the Father will hear you.

Mormon 4:5

• O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell yourselves for that which will canker, why have ye polluted the holy church of God? Why are ye ashamed to take upon you the name of Christ? Why do you not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than that misery which never dies, because of the praise of the world?

Moroni 4:1

• that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son and always remember him and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them.

Moroni 6:1

• And none was received unto baptism save they took upon them the name of Christ, having a determination to serve him to the end.

The Name - Part 5 - Baptized in the Name

2 Nephi 6:7

• And he commandeth all men that they must repent and be baptized in his name, having perfect faith in the Holy One of Israel or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God. And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned, for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel has spoken it.

2 Nephi 13:2

• Wherefore, my beloved brethren, can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father? And the Father said, Repent ye, repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my beloved Son. And also the voice of the Son came unto me saying, He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost, like unto me. Wherefore, follow me and do the things which ye have seen me do. 

Mosiah 9:7

• Now I say unto you, If this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?

3 Nephi 5:8

• Verily I say unto you that whoso repenteth of his sins through your words and desireth to be baptized in my name, on this wise shall ye baptize them: behold, ye shall go down and stand in the water and in my name shall ye baptize them. And now behold, these are the words which ye shall say, calling them by name, saying, Having authority given me of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. And then shall ye immerse them in the water and come forth again out of the water. And after this manner shall ye baptize in my name. 

3 Nephi 5:9

• And again I say unto you, Ye must repent and become as a little child and be baptized in my name or ye can in nowise receive these things. And again I say unto you, Ye must repent and be baptized in my name and become as a little child or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.

3 Nephi 8:6

• Behold, there shall one be ordained among you and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of my church, unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name.

3 Nephi 8:7

•  And this shall ye always do to those who repent and are baptized in my name, and ye shall do it in remembrance of my blood which I have shed for you that ye may witness unto the Father that ye do always remember me.

3 Nephi 8:7

•  And as I have prayed among you, even so shall ye pray in my church among my people who do repent and are baptized in my name. 

3 Nephi 8:9

• Nevertheless ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father in my name, and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood.

3 Nephi 9:10

• the Gentiles, if they will not harden their hearts, that they may repent and come unto me and be baptized in my name and know of the true points of my doctrine, that they may be numbered among my people, O house of Israel.

3 Nephi 12:3

• And as many as were baptized in the name of Jesus were filled with the Holy Ghost.

• And they who were baptized in the name of Jesus were called the church of Christ.

• And it came to pass that as the disciples of Jesus were journeying and were preaching the things which they had both heard and seen and were baptizing in the name of Jesus, it came to pass that the disciples were gathered together and were united in mighty prayer and fasting.

• And it shall come to pass that whoso repenteth and is baptized in my name shall be filled, and if he endureth to the end, behold, him will I hold guiltless before my Father at that day when I shall stand to judge the world. 

3 Nephi 12:5

• Repent all ye ends of the earth and come unto me and be baptized in my name that ye may be sanctified by the reception of the Holy Ghost, that ye may stand spotless before me at the last day.

3 Nephi 14:1

• And come unto me and be baptized in my name that ye may receive a remission of your sins and be filled with the Holy Ghost, that ye may be numbered with my people who are of the house of Israel.

4 Nephi 1:1

• And as many as did come unto them and did truly repent of their sins were baptized in the name of Jesus, and they did also receive the Holy Ghost.

Mormon 3:4

• Therefore repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus, and lay hold upon the gospel of Christ which shall be set before you

The Name - Part 4 - Bless/Glorify/Thank the Name

2 Nephi 5:2

• And now behold, I would speak unto you concerning things which are and which are to come, wherefore, I will read you the words of Isaiah. And they are the words which my brother has desired that I should speak unto you. And I speak unto you for your sakes that ye may learn and glorify the name of your God. 

2 Nephi 6:11

• Behold, my soul abhorreth sin and my heart delighteth in righteousness, and I will praise the holy name of my God.

2 Nephi 6:11

• Behold, my beloved brethren, remember the words of your God. Pray unto him continually by day and give thanks unto his holy name by night.

2 Nephi 9:18

• Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

• Wherefore, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, for I have seen his day and my heart doth magnify his holy name.

• And it came to pass that he arose according to the words of Ammon and as he arose he stretched forth his hand unto the woman and said, Blessed be the name of God and blessed art thou for as sure as thou livest behold I have seen my Redeemer and he shall come forth and be born of a woman, and he shall redeem all mankind who believe on his name.

Alma 14:11

• Blessed be the name of our God; let us sing to his praise; yea, let us give thanks to his holy name for he doth work righteousness forever.

3 Nephi 2:11

The Name - Part 3 - Pray/Ask in the Name

2 Nephi 14:3

• And now my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts, and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing. For if ye would hearken unto the spirit which teacheth a man to pray, ye would know that ye must pray, for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray. But behold I say unto you that ye must pray always and not faint, that ye must not perform anything unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.

2 Nephi 15:2

•  And I pray the Father in the name of Christ that many of us, if not all, may be saved in his kingdom at that great and last day.

Enos 1:4

• Wherefore, I knowing that the Lord God was able to preserve our records, I cried unto him continually, for he had said unto me, Whatsoever thing ye shall ask in faith, believing that ye shall receive, in the name of Christ, ye shall receive it. And I had faith, and I did cry unto God that he would preserve the records.

3 Nephi 7:4

• if it so be that my people at Jerusalem, they who have seen me and been with me in my ministry, do not ask the Father in my name that they may receive a knowledge of you by the Holy Ghost and also of the other tribes whom they know not of, that these sayings which ye shall write shall be kept and shall be manifested unto the Gentiles

3 Nephi 8:1

• go ye unto your homes and ponder upon the things which I have said and ask of the Father, in my name, that ye may understand and prepare your minds for the morrow and I come unto you again.

• Behold, verily, verily I say unto you, Ye must watch and pray always, lest ye enter into temptation, for Satan desireth to have you that he may sift you as wheat; therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name. Pray in your families unto the Father always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.

3 Nephi 8:8

• But ye shall pray for them and shall not cast them out, and if it so be that they come unto you oft, ye shall pray for them unto the Father in my name.

3 Nephi 8:9

• Nevertheless ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father in my name, and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood.

3 Nephi 9:2

• And behold, they did cause that the multitude should kneel down upon the face of the earth and should pray unto the Father in the name of Jesus. And the disciples did pray unto the Father also in the name of Jesus. And it came to pass that they arose and ministered unto the people. And when they had ministered those same words which Jesus had spoken, nothing varying from the words which Jesus had spoken, behold, they knelt again and prayed to the Father in the name of Jesus and they did pray for that which they most desired.

3 Nephi 9:9

• And it shall come to pass that the time cometh when the fullness of my gospel shall be preached unto them and they shall believe in me, that I am Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and shall pray unto the Father in my name.

3 Nephi 10:1

• Yea, the work shall commence among all the dispersed of my people with the Father, to prepare the way whereby they may come unto me, that they may call on the Father in my name.

3 Nephi 12:4

• And Jesus again shewed himself unto them for they were praying unto the Father in his name, and Jesus came and stood in the midst of them and saith unto them, What will ye that I shall give unto you?

• And they are as the angels of God, and if they shall pray unto the Father in the name of Jesus they can shew themselves unto whatsoever man it seemeth them good. 

Mormon 4:6

• Cry mightily unto the Father in the name of Jesus that perhaps ye may be found spotless, pure, fair and white, having been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, at that great and last day.

Mormon 4:9

• Behold I say unto you that whoso believeth in Christ, doubting nothing, whatsoever he shall ask the Father in the name of Christ it shall be granted him. And this promise is unto all, even unto the ends of the earth.

Mormon 4:10

• O then despise not and wonder not, but hearken unto the words of the Lord and ask the Father in the name of Jesus for what things soever ye shall stand in need. Doubt not, but be believing, and begin as in times of old and come unto the Lord with all your heart and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling before him.

• when ye shall call upon the Father in my name with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, then shall ye know that the Father hath remembered the covenant which he made unto your fathers, O house of Israel. 

Moroni 2:1

• And he called them by name, saying, Ye shall call on the Father in my name in mighty prayer, and after ye have done this ye shall have power that on him whom ye shall lay your hands ye shall give the Holy Ghost.

Moroni 3:1

• After they had prayed unto the Father in the name of Christ, they laid their hands upon them and said, In the name of Jesus Christ, I ordain you to be a priest

Moroni 4:1

• And the elder or priest did minister it; and they did kneel down with the church and pray to the Father in the name of Christ, saying, O God the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it

Moroni 5:1

• Behold they took the cup and said, O God the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son Jesus Christ to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it

Moroni 7:5

• Whatsoever thing ye shall ask the Father in my name which is good, in faith believing that ye shall receive, behold, it shall be done unto you.

Moroni 8:1

• I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child Jesus that he through his infinite goodness and grace will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end.

Moroni 10:1

• And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God the Eternal Father in the name of Christ, if these things are not true.

The Name - Part 2 - Faith/Belief in/on the Name

2 Nephi 6:7

• And he commandeth all men that they must repent and be baptized in his name, having perfect faith in the Holy One of Israel or they cannot be saved in the kingdom of God. And if they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned, for the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel has spoken it.

2 Nephi 11:3

• Behold they will crucify him, and after he is laid in a sepulcher for the space of three days he shall rise from the dead with healing in his wings, and all those who shall believe on his name shall be saved in the kingdom of God. 

2 Nephi 11:3

• And behold it shall come to pass that after the Messiah hath risen from the dead and hath manifested himself unto his people, unto as many as will believe on his name, behold, Jerusalem shall be destroyed again, for wo unto them that fight against God and the people of his church.

Mosiah 1:11

• And lo, he cometh unto his own that salvation might come unto the children of men, even through faith on his name...And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be found blameless before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent.

Mosiah 3:2

• And now because of the covenant which ye have made ye shall be called the children of Christ, his sons, and his daughters; for behold, this day he hath spiritually begotten you, for ye say that your hearts are changed through faith on his name; therefore ye are born of him and have become his sons and his daughters.

Mosiah 11:16

• Whosoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance, and whosoever ye receive shall believe in my name, and him will I freely forgive.

Alma 3:6

• And behold it is he that cometh to take away the sins of the world, yea, the sins of every man who steadfastly believeth on his name.

Alma 7:4

• And behold he cometh to redeem those who will be baptized unto repentance through faith on his name.

Alma 8:13

• And he shall come into the world to redeem his people; and he shall take upon him the transgressions of those who believe on his name, and these are they that shall have eternal life, and salvation cometh to none else.

Alma 9:2

• We must come forth and stand before him in his glory and in his power and in his might, majesty, and dominion, and acknowledge to our everlasting shame that all his judgments are just, that he is just in all his works and that he is merciful unto the children of men and that he has all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth fruit meet for repentance.

Alma 12:17

• And it came to pass that he arose according to the words of Ammon and as he arose he stretched forth his hand unto the woman and said, Blessed be the name of God and blessed art thou for as sure as thou livest behold I have seen my Redeemer and he shall come forth and be born of a woman, and he shall redeem all mankind who believe on his name.

Alma 12:22

• And thus the work of the Lord did commence among the Lamanites, thus the Lord did begin to pour out his Spirit upon them, and we see that his arm is extended to all people who repent and believe on his name.

Alma 13:9

• Aaron did expound unto him the scriptures from the creation of Adam; laying the fall of man before him and their carnal state, and also the plan of redemption which was prepared from the foundation of the world through Christ for all whosoever would believe on his name. And since man had fallen he could not merit anything of himself, but the sufferings and death of Christ atoneth for their sins through faith and repentance etc.

Alma 14:12

• my joy is carried away even unto the boasting in my God; for he has all power all wisdom and all understanding; he comprehendeth all things and he is a merciful Being, even unto salvation to those who will repent and believe on his name.

Alma 16:19

• And now, behold, I say unto you, and I would that ye should remember that God is merciful unto all who believe on his name, therefore he desireth, in the first place, that ye should believe, yea, even on his word.

Alma 16:23

• And thus he shall bring salvation to all those who shall believe on his name, this being the intent of this last sacrifice

Helaman 2:6

• Thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name. Yea, thus we see that the gate of heaven is open unto all, even to those who will believe on the name of Jesus Christ who is the Son of God; yea, we see that whosoever will lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning, and the snares, and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a straight and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked and land their souls, yea, their immortal souls at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers to go no more out.

Helaman 5:4

• Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh and behold then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name.

Helaman 5:4

• and also that ye might know of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God the Father of heaven and of earth, the Creator of all things from the beginning, and that ye might know of the signs of his coming to the intent that ye might believe on his name. And if ye believe on his name, ye will repent of all your sins that thereby ye may have a remission of them through his merits.

3 Nephi 4:7

• And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the Sons of God, and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name. 

Mormon 4:9

• And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues, they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Moroni 7:4

Moroni 7:7

Moroni 8:1

• I am mindful of you always in my prayers, continually praying unto God the Father in the name of his Holy Child Jesus that he through his infinite goodness and grace will keep you through the endurance of faith on his name to the end.

The Name - Part 1 - Intro and Onoma

The Book of Mormon uses "The Name" of the Lord in many different ways.  By my count there are 14 different ways it's used.  What follows is just a bunch of blog posts laying all the instances out.  It's more of a reference really. These are laid out in order according to # of examples, starting with the highest count.  It's been interesting to see which writers focused on which aspect of the Name.  Jesus Himself seemed to focus more on praying to the Father and being baptized in His Name.  Moroni painted a broad stroke across several categories (sometimes in the same sentence).   But the main focus by far of the Book of Mormon is on the first seven of these.  The promises for those who have Faith in the Lord's Name are huge.
